Easy Homemade Salsa

Salsa made with 6 ingredients and all done in a blender.

I love making homemade salsa.  I’m hoping my tomato plants actually produce tomatoes so I can use them instead of canned.  So far I haven’t killed them yet!!

This salsa is different because you add a little brown sugar to make it sweet.  I love making mine really hot then that sweetness balances it out.  I usually split the batch in two so those that can’t eat it hot have a milder version.  That’s what is great about this recipe… you can make it as hot or mild as you want and as sweet as you want.

I only like salsa on chips but my husband eats this on eggs, chicken, and even likes it on celery.  It’s great to make for parties.  For around $6, you can make 6 cups of salsa.

Here’s the steps on how I make it.

The amount in this picture will make 4 cups of salsa.  The recipe card (below) makes 6 cups.  See “Notes” section for 4 cup recipe.

You will need stewed tomatoes, tomato paste, green bell pepper, minced garlic, jalapenos, and brown sugar.

The jalapenos and bell pepper needs to be rough chopped to blend easier.

Put all the ingredients in a blender.

Pulse blend until all the peppers are broken up.  This is where I start tasting to see if I need more jalapenos or brown sugar.  If you add more, pulse blend again to break up or incorporate.  You can do this until you get the desired result.

Store it in a tight container.

Enjoy!!!!
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do.  I make this several times throughout the year.  It has been a big hit at parties and i’m usually asked to share the recipe.

Homemade Salsa

Easy homemade salsa made in a blender.  Mild or spicy with a hint of sweetness.

Servings 6 cups

Ingredients

  • 3 cans stewed tomatoes
  • 1 small can tomato paste
  • 1 ea green bell pepper
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar can use more or less to taste
  • 2-5 ea jalapenos can use more or less to taste

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender.

  2. Pulse blend until peppers are chopped into small pieces and all ingredients are combined.

Recipe Notes

  • I recommend putting the sugar and jalapenos in a little at a time.  Pulse blend after each addition and then taste to see if it's to your liking.
  • Jalapenos can vary.  One might be really spicy, while another is more mild.  I always recommend adding them in slowly and tasting to make sure it doesn't get too spicy.  This also means that each time you make the recipe, the amount of jalapenos needed may vary.
  • To make 4 cups instead of 6:  use 2 cans of stewed tomatoes, 3/4 small can of tomato paste, 3/4 green bell pepper, 1 Tbsp. garlic, 1-4 jalapenos, and 2 Tbsp. brown sugar.
