Make Ahead Campfire Pizza Bread

Campfire pizza bread is a super easy meal that you can prep before you leave to go camping. You can also make it at home in your oven.

I love prepping food at home before we go camping. Even though we have the camper trailer now, I still just like to avoid the messes as much as possible.

Recipes that I can just throw in the fire to heat up or cook and be done are my favorite. I do a lot of taco meat, chili, pizza, casseroles, and side dishes like this.

In fact, over the last weekend, my husband and his friends went camping so I prepared them some food before they left. They had cheesy hashbrown casserole, green beans, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and chicken breasts pounded out to equal thickness and seasoned (all in aluminum pans) so they could plop everything down right on the fire. I also made an Oreo dessert that just needed to be kept cold until serving.

On to the Campfire Pizza Bread…

You can make your own pizza dough for this or use store-bought. I used store-bought for this one because I was in a hurry.

You can fill it with whatever pizza toppings you like. I kept it basic for the kids with just pepperoni. Some other great additions could be sausage, mushrooms, olives, peppers, onions, etc. Just remember that most toppings should be cooked beforehand, especially meats.

I used a mix of yellow and white shredded cheeses but mozzarella is fine. My mozzarella had gone bad so I used what I had available.

Here’s the tricky part. You don’t want to roll the pizza tight or have a lot of rolls. It’s hard to get the middle cooked and you’ll end up with raw dough. So you want to keep it more like a loaf of bread. Just fold the edges down and under. You can also fold it in half like a big pizza pocket or cut it into smaller rectangles and make multiple pizza pockets.

Pizza ingredients rolled up into a bread log and cooked with butter and herbs on top. It's laying on foil.

Now here is where you take this to the next level. I covered the outside of the whole bread loaf with butter and covered it with garlic powder. Then, I sprinkled it with oregano and basil. This gave a garlic and herb crust that really made this delicious.

My husband loved this the first time I made it, he wanted it the next night, too.

Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 can pizza dough or homemade dough
  • 1/2 jar pizza sauce
  • 1 pkg pepperonis or other toppings
  • 1-2 cups mozzarella or mixed shredded cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter optional
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder optional
  • 1 tsp oregano optional
  • 1 tsp basil optional

Instructions

  1. Lay the pizza dough out on a piece of aluminum foil. The foil should be big enough to wrap the pizza bread in afterwards.

  2. Spread pizza sauce all over the dough. We don't like a lot of sauce but use a little extra on this recipe since you have a top and bottom crust on each bite.

  3. Sprinkle shredded cheese all over the sauce and top with your favorite toppings.

  4. Roll the sides under and seal the bottom like a loaf of bread. You can also fold over and make a pizza pocket OR cut into rectangles and make multiple pizza pockets. I pinch the edges of the dough together to create a seal.

  5. Coat the outside of the dough in butter and garlic powder. Sprinkle on the oregano and basil.

  6. Wrap up in the aluminum foil and make sure all of the sides and top are sealed. At this point, you can refrigerate or freeze the pizza. I choose to freeze so it keeps it's shape in our cooler.

  7. Cook over the campfire, turning every 5 minutes, until done. It usually takes about 20 minutes total.

Recipe Notes

Don’t forget a campfire glove, spatula, etc. to ensure no one gets burnt making this recipe over the campfire.
