Spaghetti with Bolognese Sauce

Bolognese sauce is a rich, meaty sauce that you can place over spaghetti for a hearty meal the whole family will enjoy.

I always wanted to make my own pasta sauce and now that I did, I don’t ever want jarred sauce again.  It was so good.  I definitely prefer bolognese sauce over regular pasta sauces.

I have tomatoes growing on my patio garden but they are still green.  I’m hoping they will start turning red soon but i’m worried they won’t.  The temperatures have been really hot here and I read that they have to have the right cool temps to turn red.  We’ll see what happens.

Homemade Bolognese Sauce

This is an easy recipe to make.  It just takes time to cut the vegetables and the cook time is longer than most of our quick recipes.

Bolognese sauce differs from regular pasta sauce because it has more meat in it.  Sauces like marinara are made more with tomatoes, while bolognese has more meat than tomatoes.

The vegetables are brunoise diced (fine diced).  You will want to julienne cut each vegetable which is cutting them into thin, long strips.  Then slice each strip into small cubes.

This is a great way to hide vegetables in the sauce.  The kids will never know they are there.

Vegetables for Bolognese Sauce

The sauce includes ground beef and Italian sausage.  You could try other types of sausage and possibly ground turkey for a healthier option or different flavor.

Bolognese Meat Sauce

Once you add the tomatoes, it’s just a sit and wait game.  The sauce will thicken a little while cooking so make sure to stir it occasionally.

Bolognese Sauce

This sauce was so good we made it twice already this month.  My next adventure is to find a good tomato sauce recipe so I never have to buy pasta sauce again.  Love making things homemade and hopefully a little healthier for my family.

If you make this, let me know what you thought in the comments below.  Got a good spaghetti sauce recipe, share it with us!  We’d love to hear from you.

Prep Time 30 minutes

Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 stick celery brunoise or fine diced
  • 1 ea onion brunoise or fine diced
  • 4 baby or 1 whole carrot brunoise or fine diced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground Italian sausage
  • 2 cans 28oz. crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp basil
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 1 box spaghetti

Instructions

  1. Mince 3 cloves garlic and brunoise (fine dice) 1 stick of celery, 1 onion, and 1 whole carrot or 4 baby carrots

  2. Heat a large dutch oven or pot over medium to high heat with 1 tbsp olive oil. You do not want to use a cast iron pan/pot for this recipe. The acid in the tomatoes is not good to cook for a long time in cast iron.

  3. Place the diced vegetables in with the olive oil and sautee for 4-5 minutes.

  4. Add the ground beef and sausage to the vegetables. Ground up the meat while cooking over medium to high heat. Drain any excess grease.

  5. Add crushed tomatoes, basil, and oregano to the meat/vegetables mixture. Stir until combined.

  6. Cover with a lid and turn the heat down to medium-low. Let cook for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

  7. About 15 minutes before your bolognese sauce is done cooking, start a large pot of water for the spaghetti. Cook the spaghetti according to package directions.

  8. Top the spaghetti with bolognese sauce or stir the sauce and spaghetti together. Serve.
