Red white and blue layers in a cake covered with red white and blue frosting. Whole cake in background with piece cut out and slice on white plate in the front.

An easy cake to celebrate the Fourth of July. White cake in layers of red, white, and blue.

Impress your friends with a three-layer red, white, and blue July 4th cake.

I used boxed cake mixes so this truly is an easy cake to prepare.

Steps

First, you are going to need 3 equal-sized cake pans. You can use whatever size you like, but I prefer 8″ or 9″. If you don’t have 3 pans, cook two and then clean it out and cook the last one after.

You will also need 1-2 boxes of white cake mix (plus box ingredients). If using a smaller size pan, cut the recipe down to one box of cake mix and one batch of frosting.

I also recommend a cooking spray with flour for your pans. They should be located with the other cooking sprays. I never have a problem getting my cakes to release out of pans when using them.

Second, you are going to need red, pink, and blue food coloring. Pink??? Yes, pink. Red is a really hard color to bring out of white cake/frosting. If you use too much food coloring, it can give foods a weird taste (depending on the dye). I always dye white food items pink first to get a little more color going before trying the red.

Next, you’ll need a good frosting recipe. I like to use this recipe. Again, if using 8″ to 9″ pans, I would make two batches of the frosting. If using smaller pans, one batch should be plenty.

Lastly, bake, assemble, and frost. Of course, decorate as much or as little as you want. I went with a simple decoration but you could go all out. I really wanted the Penta Angel Foil Firework Cupcake Toppers 50Pcs 9 Inch Multicolor Cake Cocktail Food Fruit Drinks Picks Toothpick Sticks for Christmas Birthday Wedding Baby Shower Party Decoration""“>firework toothpicks to put as a centerpiece but I couldn’t get them in time. They also have Pkgd U S Flag Picks (50/Pkg)""“>American Flag toothpicks.

If you get dye on your hands, remember to wash them as soon as possible so you don’t end up with dyed fingers 🙂

My pans come from this Wilton Checkerboard cake pan set.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes white cake mix (plus ingredients on box) I prefer Duncan Hines
  • 1 ea red, pink, and blue food coloring
  • 2 batches white frosting
  • decorations

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spray 3 equal sized cake pans liberally with cooking spray. I prefer the cooking spray with flour for baking. *If using pans smaller than 8″ or 9″, use one box of cake mix and one batch of frosting.
  3. Prepare the white cake mix according to package instructions. Pour the prepared cake mix into 3 separate bowls OR pour one equal part into one cake pan and the other two parts into separate bowls.
  4. Dye one of the equal parts of cake mix with blue food coloring until you get the desired color. For the red cake mix, dying the white cake mix pink makes it easier to get the red color you desire for this cake. Put a couple drops of pink in to color pink and then add red food coloring until it reaches the desired color.
  5. Pour the colored cake mixes into the remaining two pans. Cook according to the box instructions and until cooked through. Once cooked, cool on a cooling rack.
  6. While the cakes are cooling, prepare your favorite white frosting. I prefer the recipe added in the notes section below.
  7. Assemble the cake by first placing the blue layer on your cake board or stand. Add a layer of white frosting. Place the white cake on top of the blue layer with frosting. Frost that layer. Add the red layer. Frost the rest of the cake all over, or however you want to frost it, and then decorate to your choosing.
