Banana Wontons are crispy on the outside and filled with sweet bananas and chocolate on the inside.
These crispy, sweet banana wontons are the perfect dessert to go with any dinner.
My sister worked at a restaurant several years ago and couldn’t stop talking about the banana wontons they served there. My friends and I went to try them out and I was hooked immediately.
The creamy banana in the middle blends perfectly with the crispy, sugary outside. Serving with ice cream and topping with caramel sauce sends the whole dessert over the top.
Serve Immediately…
The only downside to them is they are best served immediately. This isn’t a dessert I’d plan to take to a party or plan to make a big batch of. I make them for my family…. or just myself. Don’t judge! Yes, sometimes I even make them for breakfast lol I’m obsessed.
I have read where people baked them in the oven so that may be an option if you want to make a large quantity or want to make them a little healthier. If you try this method, let me know in the comments how well it turns out.
I usually make 4-6 wontons per person. The preparation takes a few minutes but cooking them goes really quickly.
Preparing the Wontons
The first thing you want to do is get your oil preheating on the stove. I use a small or medium pan and cook 3 or 4 at a time. You’ll want to heat the oil on medium heat.
If you don’t have a cinnamon/sugar mixture already prepared, you will need to do so. The ratio is 3 or 4 parts sugar to 1 part cinnamon. I usually do 1/4 cup sugar and 2 or 3 teaspoons of cinnamon.
Second, lay out the number of wonton wrappers you want to use. You will need one wrapper per wonton.
Next, mash up a banana. You will need one banana for approximately 10 wontons. Pour approximately two teaspoons full of mashed banana in the middle of each wonton. You want a good amount of filling but not so much that you can’t seal the wonton. If you’re not sure, put the filling on one and try to close it. Cut back or add more if needed.
If the wonton comes unsealed, the banana mixture inside will leak out leaving you with a mess in your grease and also no filling in your wonton.
I put 2-3 white chocolate chips sprinkled over the mashed banana to add a little more sweetness. You could also use other flavors of chips to change the flavor.
Wet your finger and run it along the edge of wonton wrapper (around where you put the mashed banana). Fold one edge of the wrapper up to meet with the opposite edge. Press all the way around the edges to seal. You should have a triangle shape when you are finished.
Continue sealing each one.
Frying Process
Once finished, gently place a few in the hot oil and cook until golden brown. It should only take about a minute or less on each side.
Take out of the oil and place it on a paper towel. Place your next batch in the oil and while those are cooking, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over the hot wontons.
Serve immediately with ice cream and top with caramel or chocolate sauce. You could also add nuts, cherries, or other toppings.
