Muddy Buddies is a fun kid’s treat. Easy to make and even easier to eat!
Muddy Buddies is one of those popular, classic recipes that seems like it has been around for ages. I remember eating it when I was a kid.
Chex cereal came out in 1937 and muddy buddies is thought to have originated in the 50’s or 60’s. A lot of people say they had to make it as a recipe in Home Economics class but I don’t remember making it.
Chex Mix brand actually sells bags of Muddy Buddies premade in the aisle next to other Chex Mix snacks. It’s so easy to make yourself, though, and a lot cheaper.
Tons of variations have been created over the years to include other flavors and add-ins. Many people even serve it at holidays with holiday themed food items added in. M&M’s have become a popular candy to add in for holiday colors.
Some have used different cereals to create a different flavor altogether but I like sticking with the classic recipe.
Muddy Buddies is great to bag in individual bags for school lunches, kids parties, etc. Worried about peanut allergies? You can use a different nut butter, use Nutella instead of peanut butter, skip the peanut butter completely, or try a different combination. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with creating your own way of making it.
